Get inspired by our stylist of the week…
“Treat the universe well and you will be treated well in return.”
I’d say Madeline is practicing a life mantra we should all consider following. With an artistic eye and a drive to partake in all things creative, this western dreamer is inspiring us daily with the images that she posts to FP Me. Sit back and get to know a little bit more about the beauty known as Madagascar.
What are three words that would describe you?
Passionate, energetic, aspiring
Are you from Salt Lake? If not, how did you make your way to Utah?
I was born and raised in Gilbert, Arizona. I loved growing up in Arizona so much. I started working at Free People Chandler right out of high school. That store and my co-workers there became my heart.
Eventually I started to get stir-crazy and anxious to be independent and have a change in scenery. I actually just moved to Utah about two months ago on a whim. I bought a plane ticket, and now I am living in an apartment in Orem with three lovely people my age.
What’s one thing about Salt Lake City that people might be surprised to find out?
People might be surprised to know about the music scene in Salt Lake. So many really talented and cool low-key bands with free or $5 shows. Best thing ever.
What’s an average day in the life of Maddie look like?
Right now, it goes like this: Roll off of my foam pad (I don’t have furniture yet), try to get ready in 10 minutes, and scramble out the door to work. I work 40 hours a week as a scheduler for a home security company (trying to save up for fashion school). After work I run around town with my friends into the early morning hours, trying to catch up on time I feel like I lost at work.
We’ll either see shows, or go on drives or hikes up the canyon. Some nights though, what feels best is a deep personal conversation with my best friends. On my day off from the desk job I take a train to Salt Lake for a shift at Free People — the fun stuff!! Sunday is my only day off and it really should be a catch up day, but it truly never ends up being one… I hate to need sleep and I hate to do things like laundry when I have a million other things I want to do.
If you had to choose one movie character or TV personality that depicts your personal style, who would it be?
I feel like I always end up looking like a character from Almost Famous. Sometimes Penny Lane, sometimes one of the guys in Stillwater.
What’s your form of creative expression?
Fashion design and styling. My last 2 years of high school, for half of every day, I was lucky enough to be a part of a fashion program at a college prep school called EVIT. I got to go to New York and then at the end of the year, create a 5-look clothing line. Everything about being in that program shaped me as a person when I needed it the most. The day of the show — and even the months spent working for it — opened my eyes to how completely consumed I am in the art of it all. Addicted to having a vision and bringing it to life. Clothing will always be it for me, whether I’m styling or designing. I’ll always be doing both.
What are three things you always have on hand, no matter what?
I have this black backpack that I take with me EVERYWHERE. But ask anyone who has ever spent time with me, I also leave it EVERYWHERE. I always have my phone, and I always have natural deodorant (you gotta apply that stuff 3 times a day), and I always have Clif bars. But, the most vital thing for my well-being is a small brush for my bangs.

Do you have a life mantra that you try to always follow?
Put good in, get good out. Help in any way you can, and you’ll get the help you need back. Treat the universe well and you will be treated well in return. We were put on this earth to enjoy our time here. Also, I think doing what you love and taking pride in it is the sexiest thing a person can do.
What music have you been listening to recently?
The Night VI. My favorite band ever. Groovy melodies with amazing guitar solos. And Sophie Rose’s silky voice.
Also, Wolf Alice, Made In Heights, Ta-Ku, and Ryn Weaver. And HAIM (!!!)
What are three Instagram accounts that you would suggest everyone to follow?
@tyfrench – Feed is dark yummy dream- and he works so hard on it!!
@harpersmithphoto– Really dope and gritty fashion photography.
@tezzamb– if you’re not following her you’re INSANE. And that’s that.
Here today, gone tomorrow to….?
Here today, gone tomorrow to be on the road with a bad ass girl band, styling them for music festivals, music videos and TV appearances.
What does being ‘free’ mean to you?
Being free, to me, means being free to feel. Free to love whoever your soul loves. Free to do whatever your soul is hungry for and never apologize for it.
